The Engle Progeny Cases
The “Engle Progeny” cases were the individual lawsuit that were allowed to proceed after the Florida Supreme Court decertified the Engle class in the original Engle case.
- 2009 – Progeny trials begin
- 2010 – Initial appellate rulings in Progeny trials
- 2015 – Cigarette industry settles Federal Engle cases
The Engle progeny cases got underway in 2009, and through 2014 about 185 trials have taken place. A majority of the trials have been won by plaintiffs, even though the defendants count mistrials as victories.
Despite industry claims that they would never settle, in 2015, Philip Morris, R.J. Reynolds, and Lorillard reached an agreement to settle the Engle progeny cases still awaiting trial in Florida federal courts for about $100 million. Approximately 3200 Engle Progeny cases are still pending in State court.
